Yoga and wine at Silvermist Organic Wine Estate

Our first stop is Silvermist - an organic boutique wine estate with a gobsmacking view of the Oranjekloof Nature Reserve and Constantia Valley. Make your way up to the new Silvermist Kraal, a unique venue with a tasting facility build on the back of a truck with a big lawn, surround sound music and a cozy fire pit surrounded by a solid wall of wood from invasive tree species cleared for planting vineyards. You just know you’re in for a spectacular space to enjoy a memorable experience!

Start off on an invigorating note by doing yoga with the remarkable backdrop of the back of the Twelve Apostles Mountains. Taking a moment to become present does wonders for your mind, body and soul. No previous yoga experience is necessary. Once you’ve found your zen, you’ll be ready for your first wine of the day.

The charming winemaker Gregory Brink Louw can tell you wonderful stories about his family farm and their unique wines. His farming and viticulture journey began with clearing invasive forestry in 2000 to make way for soil preparation and planting vines, only to reap the rewards of his first vintage 10 years later in 2010. The labor of love for wine making started with 4 months of cutting wood and 3 years of moving the cut logs, which now make up the Kraal Walls. Silvermist prides itself on producing small batches of organic wine, preferring quality over quantity. You’ll get to crack open one of just 8000 bottles of their Sauvignon Blanc. Each bottle is individually numbered to make it extra special. Next, you’ll get to try the Rocketdog Red, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz named after the winemaker’s beloved dog. Their wines are double certified organic. They’ve taken the classic wine formula and reworked it to be more sustainable. The result is something you’ll have to taste to believe.

Private Cellar Tour and Cap Classique tasting at Steenberg

Take a scenic 15-minute drive to our next stop: Steenberg.

Established in 1682, Steenberg is one of the Cape’s oldest farms. On their private cellar tour, you’ll get a VIP behind the scenes look to see how and where the magic happens. You’ll see where the wines are made, bottled and stored. Knowing the history of the farm and the process it takes to make their wines will give you a new appreciation and understanding of their wines.

For your tasting you’ll be seated in their ornate tasting area, overlooking the water features outside. As your sommelier pours the Cap Classique into your four flute glasses, they’ll tell you about the fascinating story of their famed founder Catharina Ras. She leased this land from Simon van der Stel and got the legal title deed in 1688. Back then it was called ‘Swaanewide’ - The Feeding Place of Swans. Catharina apparently mistook the local spur-winged geese you’ll see on the farm for swans (like the ones she knew from her home in Germany). That explains the beautiful logo and designs you’ll see on all their bottles. Since April 2015 Steenberg Hotel, Steenberg Winery and the two restaurants belong to Graham Beck.

The four Cap Classiques you’ll taste include the Brut 1682 Chardonnay, Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, Brut 1682 Pinot Noir and the Steenberg Lady R. Their grapes are hand-picked and hand-selected, and believe us when we say you can taste the quality in the bubbles (or “mousse” as they call it). These bubbles are soft and light and feel like a celebration on your tongue. The farm benefits from its close proximity to the ocean and its mountain slope that provides good shade for the grapes. The pairing also includes deliciously crispy crackers that double as palette cleansers.

After you’ve fallen in love with the Cap Classique, you can explore the gardens. There is an audio guide to the garden that will give you a great overview of the landmarks you’ll pass. You’ll get an opportunity to admire the building’s unique architecture, the fynbos in the garden, and the sculptures by Italian-born sculptor Edoardo Villa. There are 15 of his sculptures on the property, creating a striking contrast between the historic buildings and eye-catching contemporary art.

Picnic lunch on the lawns at Tryn at Steenberg Farm

For our next adventure, you need to drive to the 5-star Steenberg Hotel’s section. The sun-dappled lawns outside Tryn restaurant are the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch. Unfold your provided picnic blanket, pop open a bottle of Steenberg bubbly and sit back and relax. Sharing a beautiful meal, getting fresh air and enjoying the spacious lawns is all on the menu. Their picnic boxes were conceptualised by their Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin, so you know you’re in good hands. Expect some delicious and flavoursome snacks and meals perfect for the whole family.

A pampering Spa Treatment

Swap your clothes for a fluffy robe and step from heated floor tiles into comfy slippers for your next itinerary item. Forget about your to-do list, zoom out and relax completely with a treatment from one of Steenberg’s expert spa therapists. They have a great array of treatment options to choose from and whichever you choose is guaranteed to make you feel younger, more radiant and oh so pampered. Ready to face the world anew. The nail treatments are done in the pampering area next to their calming swimming pool, adding yet another layer of relaxation to the mix.
